Thailands northern most city was established in 1263 and is situated along the 130km long Kok River. Attractions worth visiting include King Mengrai Monument, the town market, Wat Phra Singh (14th Century), Wat Phra Kaew - the most adorned city temple - and the Clock tower which is illuminated nightly.

Worthy of further travel north is Chiang Saen which is situated north at the Golden Triange where Thailand, Laos and Myanmar meet.
